I painted these canvases (and many others like them) while in undergraduate and graduate school. My intention was to explore through art the psychological and philosophical conundrums of mundane life.
As with all classical surrealist works, their intended function is to force open a new window on the world by disrupting rational thought or other expected conventions. Later I re-discovered that the same thing can be accomplished through the act of painting, itself, when done right. I started painting night scenes and then found myself painting simple landscapes again. And for me, it was an ever-expanding universe, with more open-ended questions than are seen in these paintings. |
