Why prints?

The striking longevity and unexcelled optical quality of the new generation of digital Epson prints and inks have finally convinced me to make prints available. I am only offering reproductions of my gouache paintings, since the prints (like the gouaches themselves) are made on 100% cotton rag paper, and have the greatest visual affinity to the original. The paper size in most cases is 8 x 10, with the printed image the full size of the original painting, usually only a few square inches. Because of the veracity of the process, in most cases it is extremely difficult to tell the difference between the original and the print!

What they are NOT

First of all, reproductions ordered from this site are not hand-pulled prints. True fine art prints (etchings, true lithographs and the like -- the traditional methods of printmaking) are rightly considered artworks in themselves because the print process requires the skills of a master craftsperson and artist, and to an extent each print isslightly different from every other one. The number of prints was typically very low due to deteriorating physical properties inherent in the plate or printing surface - unlike today's photomechanical "lithograph" process in which many thousands of identical prints can be made on a mass scale. The materials of old - black ink on cotton paper, mostly - were archivally sound and would last for a very long time; again, unlike most "art prints" today.

The prints offered on this site are not mechanically mass-produced "art prints" typically found at a mall store, gift shop or museum store, which suffer from lack of optical and archival excellence. Each one of my small-edition prints is individually produced with archival inks and papers, inspected by the artist, signed, numbered and embossed with a special signature to insure authenticity.

What they ARE

Visual fidelity: The pattern of the giclee (from the French for “spray”) printing process is almost invisible to the unaided eye, unlike the mechanical dot pattern of standard photo-litho prints (as in magazines, cards, so-called fine-art prints, etc.). Hence these digital prints are distinguished by a striking fidelity to the original artwork.

Longevity: These prints are made with special pigmented inks rated as “permanent ”, sprayed onto pH-neutral heavy velvet cotton paper with a high quality Epson printer. This means that the color print you see today will remain stable and true for a very long time - much longer than previously possible even a five years ago. These new inks rate at the top of their competitive field, and are the longest-lived colors available. [Based on independent tests at Wilhelm Research, the Epson inks may well have longevity in excess of 200 years -- many times the life of standard lithographs, color photographs, cibachrome prints, and even far beyond the expected lifetimes of standard Iris and other giclee prints. For further information on the permanence of these various media and the ongoing research, please check out http://www.wilhelm-research.com.]

Quality control is of utmost importance. The original painting is directly scanned at a very high resolution. The prints are produced one at a time on heavyweight velvet 100% cotton rag paper. The artist personally inspects each print for color accuracy and other quality issues, and then hand-signs, numbers, and embosses them with a unique embosser for authentication. All editions are limited to just fifty prints.

Satisfaction Guaranteed - We will refund the purchase price if you return a print within 30 days of the shipment date for any reason.
